Our History

Xaverian Capital is a student-run investment fund at St. Francis Xavier University (StFX) in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. It began as the Schwartz Investment Society, where students managed simulated portfolios to learn about investing. In 2018, the idea to manage real money for the university’s endowment fund took shape. Thanks to the efforts of students like Stu Tabor, Thomas Chia, and Cameron Chubb the concept was brought to life, securing $500,000 from the student endowment fund.

We officially launched in September 2020 under the name Xaverian Capital, starting with $250,000. By April 2021, we received the remaining $250,000, bringing our total AUM to $500,000. Since then, we have grown our portfolio to over $750,000, outperforming our benchmark, the TSX Composite Index, by 15.5%. Additionally, we have helped our members secure prestigious roles in the finance industry, showcasing the real-world impact of our fund.

Investment Policy

Xaverian Capital invests exclusively in TSX Index equities. Each stock must have a share price over $5 at the time of purchase and a market cap above $250 million, ensuring a focus on quality and stability.

Investment Philosophy

Xaverian Capital upholds a value investing philosophy and has two primary objectives.

1

Capital Growth

The first investment objective is capital growth. Investments are made based on the long-term fundamental prospects of a company, and the expected holding period is five or more years. Short-term trading and market timing considerations are not included in the decision framework.

2

Capital Preservation

The second primary investment objective is capital preservation. Xaverian Capital does not seek to maximize returns by speculating on assets. Instead, it strives to grow its capital base in a manner that minimizes the probability of a permanent loss of capital.

Investment Considerations

Margin of Safety

We mitigate risk by investing in companies with a sound, long-term outlook that are trading at reasonable prices relative to their estimated intrinsic value.

Attractive Growth Prospects

We seek investments with considerable growth potential.

Excellent Management

We look for strong leadership focused on innovation and long-term growth as opposed to short-term, unsustainable gains.

Competitive Advantage

We seek investments with a formidable and sustainable competitive advantage.
